Pancake Tuesday
Americans may call it Fat Tuesday, but in Ireland the day before Ash Wednesday is known as Pancake Tuesday—the perfect excuse to eat pancakes! Traditionally, it was the last chance to enjoy rich foods like eggs, milk, butter, and sugar before the fasting season of Lent begins.
In Ireland, families enjoy thin, crêpe-style pancakes with classic lemon and sugar—or get creative with chocolate, fruit, or syrup. In the U.S., the day is also known as Mardi Gras (“Fat Tuesday” in French), famous for colorful parades, music, costumes, and indulgent treats.
