AWCD Hike for 17 February 2022
Hello hikers! Our AWCD Hike this week is not a hillwalk, but a ramble on the shores of Bull Island. Although Bull Island came about as the result of human activity – the construction of the Bull Island wall in 1825 - it is now a National Bird Sanctuary, a biosphere reserve, a National Nature Reserve, a Special Protection Area under the EU Birds Directive, and a Special Area of Conservation under the EU Habitats Directive.
Date: Thursday, 17 February 2022
Hike: We will meet just outside the Raheny DART Station and walk from there to and across the causeway bridge onto the island. We’ll stop briefly at the Interpretive Center if it is open, then turn north on Dollymount Strand and walk to the north end of the island. Please bring binoculars if you have them.
Those that would like to can join us for lunch at a local café after the walk.
Meeting place: Raheny DART Station
Meeting time: 10:00
Hike time: 3 hours
Please bring: 1 liter water, snack, rain gear, hat and gloves
Please sign up through Wild Apricot by the end of Wednesday (16 February) if you plan to join us on the walk.
I will set up a WhatsApp group for this walk.
Thank you!
