October 5 - Evaluating Bridge Hands
October 12 - Opening 1 minor and simple responses
October 19 - Opening 1 Major openings and responses
October 26 - Opening 1NT and simple responses
November 2 - Conventions after 1NT openings
November 9 - Advanced bidding and play of the hand
December 7 - Advanced bidding and play of the hand
December 14 - Putting it all together

FAWCO VIRTUAL EVENT: Global Issues Book Discussion — That Librarian

The FAWCO Education Team has selected That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America by Amanda Jones as our next Global Issues read. This is a book we believe will spark meaningful conversation across our FAWCO community. Amanda Jones, a small-town librarian in Louisiana, attended a library board meeting to advocate for diverse books and found her life turned upside down. She was harassed, threatened and publicly attacked. Rather than back down, she chose to stand up, even taking legal action against her harassers. What makes this book especially compelling is how it moves between the deeply personal and the broader global context. Jones connects local book challenges to larger, organized efforts, offering an eye-opening look at what is at stake when access to diverse stories is restricted.

The Education Team looks forward to coming together as a global community for this important discussion. Please feel free to join us for this virtual event, even if you have not read the book feel free to join the Education team and discuss with other Americans living abroad about That Librarian.

Our first meeting will be a relaxed get-to-know-you gathering.No reading required! Just come with ideas for books, essays, media or food-related activities you’d be curious to explore together.

We’ll share recommendations, see what interests the group and decide what we’d like to read or do for our next meeting.

Hello hikers!

Our next AWCD hike/hillwalk will take us on a truly spectacular route around the Upper Lake of Glendalough. We’ll climb up from the upper Glendalough carpark past the Poulanass Waterfalls, then wend our way up to the Spinc, from which the whole of the Glendalough valley can be seen. We’ll follow the boardwalk high above the lake, then descend slowly into the valley to cross the stream via a footbridge above the upper lake. From there we’ll return to the carpark via the Miner’s Road on the north side of the lake.

Date: Friday 18th of September

Meeting time: 9.50 for a 10.00 start

Hike distance: 9.7 km

Hike time: 4 hours

Please bring: 1 liter water, lunch and snack, rain gear, hat and gloves, walking sticks

I have been asked by the AWCD to point out that walkers should be aware that they are responsible for their own safety and that they are NOT covered by the AWCD for Personal Accident Insurance. To hike with the Hillwalking group you must be a member of Mountaineering Ireland which provides us with insurance cover. If you have not walked with us before, you are allowed two guest walks before joining Mountaineering Ireland. You will need to sign a Guest Waiver Form.

Please sign up through Wild Apricot by the end of Wednesday (17 September) if you plan to join us on the hike. We will be setting up carpools to get to the trailhead; Please let me know if you can drive, and the nearest DART/LUAS station at which you can collect people. Carpool riders will be asked to pay 10 euro to their driver to help defray the cost of petrol.

BREATHWORK SESSION

"Breathe with Horses" is a wellness experience located in County Meath, Ireland, founded and run by Áine McGarry. This includes a tour of an traditional Irish Thatched cottage!

Based at Trohanny Cottage in Kells, this initiative combines mindfulness, conscious breathing (including the Buteyko method), and equine-assisted, ground-based interaction with horses and donkeys.

Please note: this is not horse riding, but rather in presence of horses, donkeys, cats, dogs. This is outdoors, but can be moved inside in bad weather.

Key Details About the Experience:

Focus: The sessions are designed for relaxation, emotional regulation, and stress relief.

Methodology: Áine uses a combination of Eagala-inspired groundwork (no riding) and breathwork coaching.

Environment: Sessions take place in a "safe haven" outdoors, often featuring a, bespoke raised bench for comfort, as well as cozy indoor sessions by the fire.

About the Founder: Áine is an Advanced Breathwork teacher, Buteyko method instructor, and qualified equine specialist with a background in nursing.

Accessibility: No prior experience with horses is necessary.

Date: Saturday May 30th

Time: noon

Address: Moynalty, Kells, Co. Meath, Ireland (near the historic town of Kells).

Cost: €50 per person includes (cash only, payable on the day)

1 1/2 hour breathwork session along with a tour of a historic thatched roof cottage.

Let's start off spooky season with a spine-chilling bus tour on The Gravediggers haunted bus.

After the tour, let's head down the block for spirits (and food) at the historic Victorian classic Millstone Restaurant.

Buy your €35 (as of September 9 there is a 20% ticket discount available on the website) tour tickets here for the 5:15pm SUNDAY October 11th tour.

Meet at 5pm outside the H&M on College Green to board the bus with our costumed guides and stops at St. Audeons, Kilmainham Gaol, Glasnevin cemetery, and a toast at the purportedly haunted Gravediggers pub. Bus takes us back to College Green where we will head down the block to the Millstone Restaurant (purchase on your own).
