WED: Coffee and a Wee bit of Culture (03 Jun 2026)

Interested in being exposed to some Irish cultural nuggets and then scarper for coffee with friends? Then join us for “ Coffee and a Wee bit of Culture”. Our tours usually last under 30 minutes.

June event will be The Skyview Tower in Smithfield

Look out from 60 metres up in the Chimney Tower. The Skyview tower is 259 steps up into the air, in the middle of the old Jameson chimney. The top of the tower offers 360-degree views of Dublin city, and way beyond. You’ll be able to view Dublin Castle, Guiness Storehouse, and the Cultural Quarter all from this viewing platform.

The Chimney was originally built in 1895, and was part of the Bow Street distillery. When it was completed, it was the tallest structure in Dublin City, employing up to 300 people at it’s peak.

We now have a new AWCD group for members who like to play bridge! They meet weekly on Thursdays at 11:30 (except for Monthly Morning Meeting dates) at the Clayton* Ballsbridge (opposite the InterContinental Dublin) to play and learn very casually.

*Downstairs in the Atrium Lounge from 11:30am.

The group plays a very relaxed set of games with the objective being teaching and having fun. They score Chicago style.

MON: Private Architectural Tour of Merrion Square-- Exclusive Access to Georgian Dublin (22 Jun 2026)

Join long-distance member Terry Sullivan and Dr. Conor Lucey on a private, customized tour of Merrion Square architecture!

Meeting at Rutland Fountain, Merrion Square at 1pm, the tour will involve a walkabout of Merrion Square and its environs, describing the development of the Fitzwilliam (later Pembroke) Estate between 1750 and 1830. It will include description and characterisation of the garden square as expressions of social status in the period, and consider the roles of real estate development and the speculative building industry. We will then visit 63 Merrion Square, built 1789–94, and home to the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland since 1917. Here we will explore a typical house of the period, with access to the principle reception rooms and circulation spaces, both richly decorated in the Irish neoclassical style, and to the authentically restored garden at the rear property which was achieved in part by funds raised by the American chapters of the Irish Georgian Society. Coffee will follow at the Cellar Bar of the Merrion Hotel on Merrion Street, birthplace of the Duke of Wellington.

Host: Terry Sullivan is a recognized interior designer and educator whose work is dedicated to the classical design that began at the intersection of art history and practice. She studied Interior Design at Mt. Vernon College / George Washington University, where she worked with Dr. James Carder on the history of architecture, interiors, and furniture. Terry founded Terry Sullivan Interiors in 1987, practicing for over 4 decades at the intersection of architecture, historical precedent, and decorative arts. Her firm has been recognized by House Beautiful as one of America's Top 100 Decorators, and by Elle Decor as one of America's Top 30.

Guide: Dr. Conor Lucey is Associate Professor of architectural history in the School of Art History and Cultural Policy at University College Dublin, Ireland. He is a Board Member of the Irish Georgian Foundation and of the Castletown Foundation, and a former President of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland (2017-2020). Dr Lucey sits on the editorial board of Vernacular Architecture and Irish Architectural & Decorative Studies journals. He has written or edited four books on architecture since 2007.
